Lately I've taken to downloading pop music mp3s, from Maroon 5 to Nickelback, even Ashlee Vanilli, errr Simpson. Not because I like their music but more because of paranoia. I grew up listening to pop music. Back when I was in high school I used to follow Casey Kasem's 'American Top 40' program. I even started this hobby of listing down the Top 40 songs. I had a compilation of all the weekly top 40 songs from 1984 til 1990 (wish I still have it with me). Only stopped doing it when I migrated here & had more pressing things to do. Of course my taste in music had become more 'subtle' & shifted my interest to jazz & the older 60s & 70s genre. I stopped listening to commercial radio stations & fixed myself into listening to my cd collections instead. Of course you can't avoid being exposed to cheesy boybands, pretentious divas & annoying metalheads (that's my perception of 'pop' during that time). Nowadays I realize that trying to steer clear of pop music just because you think its 'cheesy' is not reflective of being a music fan. Its more of snobbery & hypocrisy. Robbie Williams is not & will never be Prince but you gotta give him credit for being a great entertainer. Eminem's routine is one-dimensional but why the fuck is he still raking it in? These are the realities that you have to accept if you don't wanna lose touch with music in general. I realized all these while doing my beloved pastimes; trivia & karaoke. With trivia, the difference between $1000 & a measly meal voucher could boil down to a question such as 'what is Mya's first & only hit?' And with karaoke, I can do my very best rendition of 'Broken Wings' & get a few claps but a bozo doing a horrible Linkin Park song can get laid that night. No, I will not dare venture that alley but the point is there's nothing cheesy in appreciating today's pop music and I'm scared that by continuing to give it the diss & shutting myself, I will end up stuck in music era where nobody gives shit.

Exactly 52 days till my next trip back to Manila. Its been 2 years already but seems like only yesterday when I met up with a couple of blogmates (Lauren & Rochelle). It always feels good when you go back not only because you get to see your family & friends but you also get to meet up with new acquaintances. People you've met through the internet. I don't think I'll ever outgrow this kind of socializing. People say that internet destroys social life but that's actually up to you. Isn't chatting a form of social interaction as well? So essentially, you are having a social life. Now if you spend time chatting until 5 in the morning (like I used to when I started), so much so that the only time you leave the computer is to take a dump or pee, that's another story. Anyway, I've met new people on another server & I've been invited to a couple of meets. Looking forward to that. Another thing that I am so looking forward to is seeing my new niece Katrina. I may be spending most of my holidays babysitting but I don't mind that at all. Now if I can only get my friggin passport renewed.
